Vieira (right) and her 17-year-old son Enrique (left), both
undocumented migrants from Brazil, endured a number of hardships while
working at the Michael Bianco Inc. (MBI) textile factory in New
Bedford, including limited use of restrooms and fines for spending too
long in the bathroom. On March 6, 300 U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement agents and other law enforcement officers raided MBI’s
factory, leading to the detainment of over 300 workers who could not
prove they were in the country legally. Gov. Deval Patrick called it a
“humanitarian crisis.” (Banner file photo) |
