Local and Culturally Relevant Events this week

Gov. Deval Patrick joined state and local officials, community leaders and young people to celebrate the opening of the newly redeveloped Melnea A. Cass Recreation Complex last Thursday. The Patrick-Murray administration invested $4.2 million to repair and expand the Cass Complex, formerly the site of the Melnea A. Cass Ice Skating Rink. Kip Tiernan, an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised, died of cancer Saturday. Tiernan founded and helped found a number of agencies dedicated to the support of those who society had passed over. One of her most notable contributions was Rosie’s Place, the first homeless shelter for women in the United States and located in the South End. (Don West photo)
