Local and Culturally Relevant Events this week

Mayor Thomas M. Menino welcomes home eight BPS high school boys who recently traveled to Beijing, China to play in a basketball tournament as a part of President Barack Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative. The students met with Menino and Superintendent Carol R. Johnson at the Parkman House to share their experiences. They spent 10 days in China not only playing basketball, but traveling around Beijing and learning about Chinese culture and history. (Photo courtesy of Mayor Menino’s Office)

Thurgood Marshall, who became the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, receives the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Life Membership Plaque from Carl Murphy, editor of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper in 1956.
