“Xernona and the Grand Dragon X” will play for one showing only at The Strand Theatre in Dorchester. The play is about Xernona Clayton, a living civil rights leader, journalist, and executive. The play takes place in the late 1960’s when Xernona became the first black person in the South to host a regularly scheduled prime-time television talk show, The Xernona Clayton Show. One of her guests was Calvin Craig, the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan in Georgia. The play was written and directed by Boston’s own Jacqui Parker. Jacqui Parker a lifelong Boston resident has years of experience acting, directing and writing in the theatre world. She has performed in the Actors’ Shakespeare Project and at the Lyric Stage Co. of Boston. She has directed plays at The Boston Conservatory. And in 2008 she was one of four Boston-area playwrights who were fellows in the slate of writes for the stage fostered by the Huntington Theatre Company. The cast is also comprised of talented local artists whom have made their marks in the theatre field. This event is a collaboration between the Commission on Affairs of the Elderly, the Office of Civil Rights and the Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism, and Special Events. Admission is free with RSVP.
