Tony Price
Randolph
resident and Simmons head basketball coach Tony Price was recently
inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at his alma mater, Worcester
State College.
Price, who is in his eighth year as
assistant athletic director and head basketball coach at Simmons, was a
three-year standout at Worcester State. He scored over 1,300 career
points as a Lancer, and was selected team MVP three times. He was twice
an all-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) selection and
received multiple ECAC honors on the way to leading the conference in
rebounding his junior year, finishing second in scoring his senior
year, and averaging a double-double throughout his playing career.
Off the court, Price was an active member of the Worcester State
community. He was a member of the Third World Alliance and Upward
Bound, and once led a petition on campus to have black studies courses
reinstated at the college.
“Being inducted to the Hall of Fame is the crowning moment” said Price,
who is Simmons’ all-time winningest coach. “It means that my
accomplishments and contributions to WSC athletics have finally been
recognized and will live on forever. The award also symbolizes hard
work, character, integrity and perseverance, attributes that are larger
than the game itself.”
He began his career as a coaching volunteer at the Boston Community
Center before becoming director of youth activities at Nuestra
Comunidad Development Corporation in Roxbury and director of youth and
recreation at Lena Park Community Development Corporation.
In 2003, Price was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s
coach of the year after leading his Simmons Sharks to a school-best
16-9 record.
