Women’s Pipeline for Change celebrated its first conference dedicated to getting more women of color into the political pipeline in Massachusetts.

Speakers and hosts included Maria Jobin-Leeds from the Partnership for Democracy and Education, Prof. Carol Hardy-Fanta from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston, Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz and Boston City Councilor At-Large Ayanna Pressley.

Also in attendance were former Lawrence  School Committee member Martina Cruz, Holyoke City Council member Gladys Lebrón-Martínez, former Boston City Council candidate Sheneal Parker, Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong and Elizabeth Cardona, Director of the Governor’s Western Massachusetts office.

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral reminded attendees that “As long as women, and especially women of color, remain the exception among those elected to office, equal consideration  of their interests in Congress and every state legislature will never be the rule. Political power is indispensable to economic power, especially if that power is used to level the playing field for women.”

Regarding June 28 "In the News" and the Women's Pipeline for Change First Conference featuring Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral:This must be a cruel hoax! Who would believe that "Progress" is a woman jailer of color? Have you any idea what is happening inside the House of Correction or the Nashua Street Jail? How is it that  the Bay State Banner and the Women's pipeline can you be unaware of the filthy and deplorable conditions women, "immigrants" and men face inside Cabral's lock-ups? Do you know about Cabral's retaliation against the late whistleblower Nurse Sheila Porter; that Cabral is quoted as saying the federal money to hold deportees is a God-send to her budget? There certainly is a pipeline---- it is the one run by white males in power. Is Women's Pipeline for Change proud to be part of the racist  prison pipeline? Is assimilation success? We are living in an age of mass incarceration and Cabral wants more cells. Why the long honeymoon for this jailer? It is due in no small part to her endless self-promotion and uncritical coverage. This women inflicts harm on the community and yet is lauded as a symbol of progress. How sad. The Women's Pipeline ought to know better!
