There is another thing closely related to racism that I would like to mention as another challenge. We are challenged to rid our nation and the world of poverty. From King’s dream to Obama’s mission

Today would have been the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 80th birthday. Five days from now, the nation will celebrate as Barack Obama is inaugurated our nation’s 44th — and first African American — president. Many of us cannot help but marvel at the juxtaposition of these two milestones. How proud, and perhaps astonished, Dr. King would have felt as he watched Obama take the oath of office. MORE

 

“Where Do We Go From Here?”

We’ve come a long way in our understanding of human motivations and of the blind operation of our economic system. Now we realize that dislocations in the market operations of our economy and the prevalence of discrimination thrust people into idleness and bind them in constant or frequent unemployment against their will. Today the poor are less often dismissed, I hope, from our consciences by being branded as inferior or incompetent. MORE
