Racial profiling past sets N.J. police department on promising trackNearly a decade ago, in an infamous traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike, two state troopers fired 11 shots upon a van containing four black and Hispanic athletes from the Bronx. They later admitted that they had pulled the vehicle over because of its occupants' skin color, and that they were trained to use race and ethnicity when making such decisions because their supervisors told them that minorities were more likely to be drug traffickers than whites. City Council has responsibility to address storefront tobacco adsRetail shops throughout Boston have kids coming through their doors every day to purchase staple snacks such as chips, soda, bubblegum and candy. Some of the typical food choices are far from healthy. Yet there is another easily attainable item at these stores that is potentially deadly - cigarettes. Tobacco companies, well aware of the young clientele at many convenience stores, are advertising in and around these shops as a critical and effective strategy to keep smokers smoking and recruit new, young smokers.
