If the standard of assessment applied to politicians was used to evaluate professional athletes, Babe Ruth would be known as the strikeout king instead of the "Sultan of Swat." Hendrix's 'Banner' as sonic protestI very much appreciated Howard Manly's tribute to Jimi Hendrix ("40 years later, Woodstock remains a national anthem," Aug. 20, 2009), as much for the tribute as for its inclusion in the Banner's "Black History" section. This inclusion by Manly gave him the latitude to examine Hendrix's place in the politics of the time. He did this in a way that has eluded the dominant media appropriation of Hendrix. More » |
