Thanksgiving is the traditional time to express gratitude for the bounty of the harvest. In an agrarian economy, the thanks would be to the "Great Spirit" for providing the climate and fertility of the fields that enabled crops to flourish. Few statistics are more disturbing to African Americans than the disparity of black men in prison. While African American men are 14 percent of the total US population they are 40 percent of the prison population. According to a recent Justice Department report, an estimated 10.4 percent of the entire black male population, ages 25-29 was incarcerated. More »

"Opt-Out" HIV Testing: A Better Paradigm in the Real World

Twenty-five years ago, the disease we know as HIV/AIDS was thought to affect only gay men, and consequently was relegated to the back benches of medical treatment, understanding, and constructive discussion. Little was known about the emerging epidemic, and many coped with the implications of their sickness in relative silence. With no treatment options available, there was little hope for people testing positive for HIV. More »

Councilor in Waiting: Tito Jackson

I would like to congratulate Tito Jackson, Ron Bell and Rose Arruda and the entire Jackson campaign for a fabulous come from behind win that clinched the 5th place on the City Council. What this means is that in addition to our having two persons of color duly elected to the council - Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color and Felix Arroyo, Jr. only the second Hispanic - we have "waiting in the wings" another very competent and accomplished person of color in Jackson who amassed 30, 173 votes.
