Beating the odds

Michael Oher was born on May 28, 1986 in Memphis, Tenn., where he negotiated a perilous path through the foster care system, experiencing periods of homelessness. He eventually attended Briarcrest Christian School and met Sean and Leigh-Anne Tuohy, who became his adoptive parents. His inspirational story is the subject of Michael Lewis' book, "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game," which was adapted to the screen in 2009 as "The Blind Side," starring Sandra Bullock in an Oscar-winning performance. Berklee College of Music Signature Series: 'Songs of Richard Smallwood'

The Berklee College of Music Signature Series presented last week "Songs of Richard Smallwood," conducted by Berklee student Rashad McPherson and produced by the Africana Studies department. A singer, songwriter, producer and minister, Smallwood is a six-time Grammy nominee and Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee. More »

Mad River Theater Works comes to Roxbury with two stories of African American history and cultural heritage. The troupe performs "John Henry," on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. and "Wings of Courage," on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. These musical plays appeal to parents and children alike and are a perfect way for families to celebrate Black History Month together.
