school seniors and Steppingstone Scholars Anthony Mathieu (left) and
Nnaemeka Ekwelum (right) recently received full, four-year college
scholarships. Mathieu, a Boston Latin Academy student from Mattapan,
received a Posse Foundation scholarship to attend Hamilton College in
upstate New York, while Belmont Hill School’s Ekwelum earned
recognition as a Gates Millennium Scholar and will enter Columbia

| Members
of the Massachusetts congressional delegation dedicate an American elm
tree, the official state tree of Massachusetts, on behalf of state
residents. The tree was planted on the grounds of the Capitol in
Washington, D.C. A time capsule prepared by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy —
including the poem “Liberty Tree” by Thomas Paine and a history of the
Revolutionary War-era “Original Liberty Tree” — was buried beneath the
