Local and Culturally Relevant Events this week

The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation last month presented a $10,000 grant to the Chittick Elementary School in Mattapan to open a new school library. The Tobacco Control Program of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and B.O.L.D. Teens recently recognized Deborah Jackson (not pictured) and Bessie Slaughter (left), co-owners of Kool Stop Convenience at 487 Washington Street in Dorchester, for their efforts to educate residents on the dangers of Smoking. Kevin Cherry of Roxbury was inducted last month into the Boston College High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Cherry, an excellent student and basketball player who graduated from B.C. High in 1977, was the school’s first outstanding point guard, and an All-Scholastic performer. He went on to Clark University, where he directed a potent offense that led Clark to a four-year 82-22 record, four consecutive post-season NCAA bids, and two New England Regional Championships. Mark Kennedy of Roxbury (left) was honored last month with the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Excellence in Advocacy Award. The award is presented annually to a volunteer advocate who exemplifies outstanding leadership and service supporting the society’s mission through state legislative initiatives and campaigns. Kennedy, a prostate cancer outreach coordinator for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, brings prostate cancer awareness with prevention and detection information to neighborhoods in the Boston community.
