The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, headed by Prof. Charles J. Ogletree Jr., staged its annual Vineyard forum Wednesday, entitled Between the Lines: Race and Gender in Sports in the 21st Century. (L-R) President of Mt. Washington Bank Ed Merritt; Jackson Kelley (age 13) and Tristan Kelley (age 10), the creators of non-profit Backpacks For New Beginnings (BP4NB); Councillor-At-Large John Connolly and Councillor Matt O’Malley. BP4NB is dedicated  to providing necessary school supplies and backpacks to underprivileged children. Since 2009, BP4NB has donated 850 new backpacks with school supplies. Tristan and Jackson raise all funds by themselves, and 100 percent of proceeds are used to purchase new backpacks and school supplies. Jackson and Tristan were awarded a check of $500 and 200 backpacks from Mt. Washington Bank at the annual movie night in West Roxbury.

Dudley Square’s Common Thread presented its first annual Haley House SummerFeast, a gospel jamboree and jerk chicken cook-off contest in the Haley House Bakery Café parking lot.  The contest for Best Jerk Chicken was won by Pepper Pot Restaurant at 208 Dudley Street in Roxbury.  (Photo courtesy of Haley House)
