Letters to the Editor

A note of thanks

Thanks to all those who cast a vote for Tim and me. You did so in record numbers and, by participating, you made our democracy and our Commonwealth stronger. In particular, you affirmed a belief that optimism and effort matter, and that focusing on the people behind the policies is the right way to move Massachusetts forward.

My special thanks to all the volunteers who participated in the greatest get-out-the-vote effort in the history of Massachusetts. I am so humbled by the thousands who took time out of their lives to participate in our cause and worked selflessly to make this a person-to-person campaign. That is the right way to run — and to win — an election.

From the start four years ago, Tim Murray and I had a plan. We worked it hard, and we stuck with Massachusetts. And the people of Massachusetts have stuck with us. We thank you for that. We will continue to work as leaders of all of Massachusetts, not just the people who voted for us.

Tim Murray and I went back to work on the day after election. There will be hard choices ahead, and as we make them I ask everyone in this Commonwealth to turn to each other, not on each other. We will continue to work to lift every corner and every community of the Commonwealth. I truly believe that if we can all work together, Massachusetts will continue to serve as a model for a Nation hungry for something positive to believe in.

The vegan diet that Tracye McQuirter advances in her excellent book is supported by the American Dietetic Association (ADA, the professional association for Registered Dietitians and nutrition professionals). The ADA issued this statement on vegetarian and vegan diets:

“It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that  appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or  vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide  health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes.”
