The Main EventOne of the most prodigious pugilists of all time, Sugar Ray Leonard was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., on May 17, 1956, to Cicero and Getha Leonard. The fifth of seven kids, his family moved to Washington, D.C., in 1959 before settling down seven years later in Palmer Park, Md., where his father was employed as a supermarket night manager and his mother as a nurse. Though shy as a young child, Ray followed his brother Roger's footsteps into boxing, ultimately eclipsing his elder sibling in terms of potential and finding fame by capturing the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Steve Harvey in town to promote new TV showComedian Steve Harvey knew a long time ago what he wanted to do with his life. "I decided when I was 9 years old [to be a comedian], but my parents never came to that decision," he said to the audience at Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen on Columbus Avenue. Harvey was in town doing a live taping of "CityLine" with WCVB Channel 5's Karen Holmes Ward in anticipation of his new daytime talk show, "Steve Harvey," which debuts September 4. Montreal festival redefines jazz musicThe 33rd annual Montreal International Jazz Festival kicked off its festivities north of the border on June 28 and continued through July 7. For 10 days and nights, music, stages and crowds dominated several cordoned-off blocks in the city's downtown area. Throngs of festival goers filled sections of Sainte-Catherine Street and De Maisonneuve Boulevard, nibbled snacks from street vendors and enjoyed an array of indoor and outdoor performances of musicians from around the world.
