Toward a new relevance

A debilitating legacy of racial oppression is that later generations assume the attitude of victim, even though the discrimination has abated. To some extent, this sense of victimization is kept alive by those whose valiant efforts in the civil rights movement helped bring about the massive social change. The real challenge today is to motivate people to organize their lives and rise above unfortunate circumstances. More »

Blowing Smoke

What does lung cancer teach us about climate change? The incidence of lung cancer, rare at the turn of the twentieth century, increased dramatically with the mass production and marketing of cigarettes. By the early 1950s, with Americans smoking 350 billion cigarettes a year, the rate quadrupled in men and doubled in women, compared to twenty years earlier. By the mid-1950s, dozens of scientific papers conclusively established the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. More »

CORI Reform a paper lion

The Massachusetts House of Representatives passed the much anticipated CORI Reform legislation. It has given Gov. Deval Patrick most of what he asked for in his reform message. The bill will eventually be sent back to Gov. Patrick for his final approval. But the bill lacks no real enforcement code nor funds for jobs training and housing. More »
