How would you rate Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s performance
in improving Boston’s public school system?

The Boston Public Schools should serve as a model for other schools throughout the country for innovative and forward-thinking educational success and strategies. Sadly, the City of Boston has failed.

I'd give him an F. The mayor is not addressing the core issues facing the educational system. The policies are sugar-coating the real issues that need to be addressed to improve the school system.

I wouldn’t give him a high grade for education. I’m not in favor of the redistricting plan, and there’s not enough [support] with the budget cuts. The combination of a redistricting plan that would reduce resources equals poor education for our children.

I think there have been some baby steps, but I’d like to see more structural change. I’d like to see more pilot and charter schools. I’m high on the new superintendent, Carol Johnson, and I’m grateful for her focus on lowering the high school dropout rate.

To me, we’re reverting back to the pre-desegregation days. Education is not the priority for the students who are enrolled in the Boston Public Schools until the school system remembers that we can’t have a functioning school system [in which] equity and learning do not exist. We have to get past the haves and the have-nots.
