Do you think Memorial Day has lost its original meaning?

I honestly don’t think so. I just left the gravesite and there were as many people there visiting as I see here in the park barbecuing and celebrating.

I think we lost sight of the holiday when we lost sight of every day issues.

Collectively we have lost its meaning, but not individually.

I think to a certain extent it’s been commercialized, like some other holidays, but people need to look at the real meaning of what the holiday stands for: fallen soldiers who’ve given their lives for this country.

For our people, the national perspective was never legitimized because although we fought and died for this country in every war, we are still fighting within this country for first class citizenship.

I think Memorial Day still has its meaning. The young people might not celebrate it like we used to, but I think they still realize the significance of the fallen veterans.
