What is your reaction to U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s statement
that race played no part in the prosecution of Chuck Turner?

Even though we don’t want to believe it, race plays a factor more often than we want to believe.

Whenever they send one black man into a community of color to undue another black man, it is a continuation of racism by means of siccing one black man against another.

If you believe that this wasn’t racially and politically motivated, then I have a bridge to sell you.

If it wasn’t a racially-based decision, why is it that the elected officials of the recent past [have] been people of color sent to jail? Look at the punishment of every Speaker of the House’s convictions.

I think the prosecutor is in convenient denial and the sentence that Chuck Turner received was not only cruel and unusual punishment but judicial terrorism, i.e. scare other black leaders from standing up as Chuck did.

The reality of prosecuting people of color, race, class and socio-economic status always plays a role in the veracity of prosecutions and the length of sentence. Just take a look at the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
