Do you think the State Legislature is moving in the
right direction on issues involving criminal justice?

No. I believe the criminal justice system is exacting a more sophisticated form of enslavement.

No. I think it’s moving back toward slavery.

No, I do not. The three strikes law, for example, is not only unjust but it violates the 8th Amendment.

It’s going in exactly the wrong direction. The new so-called Melanie’s Law is a typical overreaction to a tragic situation by politicians trying to court favor with the people claiming to be tough on crime.

While other states, even the most conservative states, are recognizing the U.S. folly of mass incarceration, Massachusetts is ramping up its criminal punishment system. The recently passed “three strikes” and omnibus crime bills (H3818, S2059) are a case in point. These bills, if enacted, would dramatically increase the cost of incarceration without making our communities any safer.

No, they’re not moving in the right direction. Our foreparents fought so hard to get us equal opportunity. Instead of putting positive programs in place, they’re trying to dehumanize our youth.
