The state’s lone black senator who lost the Democratic primary last month was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday and charged with accepting $23,500 in bribes from undercover agents she believed were local businessmen.
State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson, 53, was charged with attempted extortion as a public official and theft of honest services as a state senator. She faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines on each count.
The Boston Democrat entered no plea during an initial appearance in federal court in Boston and was released on an unsecured $50,000 bond.
Wilkerson was ordered to have no contact with witnesses and retain any documents related to the case or to her personal finances. She made no comment leaving the court.
In asking for those conditions, Assistant U.S. Attorney John McNeil said Wilkerson has a “long history of acting as if she is above the law.”
Wilkerson lost the Democratic primary in September to Sonia Chang-Díaz despite support from Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick. She is running a write-in campaign for the Nov. 4 election, in hopes of retaining the seat she has held since 1993.
U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan said it was coincidental the complaint was filed a week before the election.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Wilkerson was recorded by audio and videotape accepting bribes in exchange for helping a proposed nightclub in her district get a liquor license.
She also allegedly accepted payments for helping another undercover officer posing as a businessman who wanted to develop state property in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood.
Sullivan said Wilkerson accepted eight payments, ranging from $500 to $10,000, during the 17-month investigation.
An FBI affidavit filed in court includes a series of still photographs from video recordings allegedly showing Wilkerson accepting cash. In one photograph, taken in June 2007, Wilkerson appears to be stuffing a pile of cash under her sweater and inside her bra.
“Voters and taxpayers expect that elected officials will do what’s right for their constituents, not what is financially best for themselves,” Sullivan said.

The Boston Afro-American and white community are engaging in their protective stupidity mode regarding the Diane Wilkerson case. How many readers are aware of the FBI Fruhmenschen program set up by taxpayer funded FBI agents to target black elected officials in sting operations because white FBI agents feel blacks are incapable of governing? Where was the outcry from Boston's Black ministers to shut down the FBI when in 1999 a Memphis jury determined FBI agents were the assassins of Dr Martin Luther King? I guess the ministers never read the evidence from the trial in the book , ACT OF STATE: THE EXECUTION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING written by the King family attorney William Pepper. I suppose that means the Boston Afro-American community is ignorant of the file FBI agents keep on Black Americans caled RACIAL MATTERS detailed in a book by that same name and written by Professor Kenneth O'Reilly. Former FBI agent Tyronne Powers has written about these issues in his recent book EYES TO MY SOUL. Yes Tyronne Powers is Afro-American. The problem is so bad with FBI agents targeting black elected officials in sting operations whether they have committed a crime or not that several books have been written about the FBI Fruhmenschen program; a research paper appeared in the May 1998 Journal of Black Studies called THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE HARRASSMENT OF BLACK LEADERS. Jamaica Plain resident filmaker and Director of BNN Television Curtis Henderson made a documentary in 1986 called ALABAMA SUMMER detailing the FBI Fruhmenschen program. It's very sad that Dianne's career have to end this way and the only person she can blame is herself. It's unfortunate that despite what is alleged and I must say the evidence looks darm good that still their are naive people in the community that is still backing her. People you need to wake up and stop settling for less. I'm not doubting that she did a lot for community, but at the same token she was collecting bribes and using her power to screw people in the State House. For many years she did a lot of crap that the average citizen would not get away with, acted like she's above the law and it's time that constituents get what they rightfully deserved from a Senator. Whether you're a senator or a janitor you should have morales and Dianne is lacking in this area. I am puzzled by her behavior and as one commented, either she has psychological problems or serious financial problems. Dianne give up and get the help that you need and stop making people in the black community behave like they don't have any brain by asking them to continue to support you. The longest rope has an end and this is the end of your rope. I pray that you get the help that you need! |

Dianne let us all down. It doesn't matter if she was set up. She didn't have to take the bait. I understand she has lots of financial problems, but taking bribes and running off to Foxwoods to gamble is not how you deal with your money problems. Honestly, I think Dianne has some psychological problems. Her behavior is self destructive to say the least. Dianne should resign and let the residents of the 2 suffolk move on. In the futre we have to vet our candidates and make sure that yet another one of the 'talented 10th' doesn't bring shame to the rest of us. The only silver lining from all of this may be seeing John (slumlord) Cruz go down. |

You cannot get "set up" if you don't do wrong in the first place. What she does and how she conducts herself is indicative of the type of person she is...sneaky and underhanded. |

Senator Wilkerson was set up and it's a shame that she didn't see the handwriting on the walls..being black in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is no joke or picnic and being African-American myself, I know that I have to maintain higher moral and ethical standards than my white colleagues. African-Americans are judged on a whole different level because racism still exists in this country whether it be institutional or individuals who still harbor racial bigotry in their hearts, minds and souls...Wilkerson had had enough opportunities to clean up her act but certain people were just waiting for her downfall with glee...I am certain that there were those on Beacon Hill who probably knew of the so called undercover, FBI sting and that's why the people in Boston did not come out in full support of her reelection...Senator Wilkerson and her family need our prayers, support and comfort during this most difficult time in her life.... |

though her administrative irregularities were troubling," the Banner wrote in its Oct. 30, 2008 editorial. "But now, Wilkerson has been arrested by the FBI and Boston police,
