Robin Thicke at the House of Blues
I was excited to see Robin Thicke again after seeing his performance at Showcase Live back in 2008. It was a rainy and perfect night to see him and his “Sex Therapy Tour” at the House of Blues. Performing new tracks from his fourth album, “Sex Therapy: The Session,” it was pretty obvious the masterful crooner was very focused on love and relationships.
The show was a smooth blend of up-tempo hits and slow jams. It really got hot up in there when he performed two of my favorite tracks, “Teach U A Lesson” (so hot!) and “Lost Without You.” The crowd went bananas when he performed “Shooter” and “Tie My Hands.”
I’m so glad he performed one of his most heartfelt songs, “Dreamworld,” which talks about “one day when he and his wife can walk down the street in Mississippi where there’s no black and white.”
That line gives me chills each time I hear it and, on that night, there truly was no black and white, just a roomful of people who wanted to hear good music.
The Harlem Globetrotters
I had the chance to meet the legendary Curly Neal along with Hot Shot Branch from the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, during their interview with former NBA player and NESN SportsDesk analyst Dana Barros at Basketball City. I’m sure, at one point, you’ve all seen the Globetrotters either live or on TV or maybe even when they had their own cartoon series. Both guys were absolutely delightful, charming and funny, and they were in town to perform last month at the TD Garden.
I asked Curly what his fondest memories were of being a Globetrotter, and he said meeting four presidents, and he was definitely looking forward to meeting President Obama and first lady Michelle sometime soon.
His other fondest memory was drop-kicking the ball twice from half-court into the basket in his hometown of Greensboro, N.C. in front of his mom.
Curly retired from playing in 1985 but continues to make appearances for the Globetrotters. Oh, and he got the nickname “Curly” because he had a full head of curly hair when he was younger. I had to ask.
Mayo Bowl
New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo hosted the 1st Annual Mayo Bowl at Kings in Dedham to benefit Pitching in for Kids, a nonprofit designed to improve the lives of children across the New England region.
Showing off their bowling skills in support of Mayo were teammates Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, Matt Light, Shawn Crable, Gary Guyton, Pierre Woods, Brandon Meriweather, Eric Alexander, Troy Brown, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Leigh Bodden, Tully Banta-Cain, Pat Chung and Andre Tippett.
Also bowling that night were nightclub impresarios Ace Gershfield, Jeff London and Ezra Tavarez from 6one7 Productions. Joining in the fun were WBZ-TV’s sports anchor, Steve Burton; WZLX’s morning duo Kevin Karlson and Pete McKenzie from “Karlson and McKenzie”; National Amusements’ Kevin Mitchell; and Mary Skelton Roberts, senior program officer at the Barr Foundation.
“We Take Your Health to Heart” Gala at the Mandarin Oriental
Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center (RoxComp) hosted the 24th Annual “We Take Your Health to Heart” Gala last month at the Mandarin Oriental in the Back Bay.
The evening began with a VIP champagne reception sponsored by Louis Roederer Champagne and Little Pearl hosted by Ronald L. Walker II, chairman of RoxComp and president and founder of Next Street Financial, and Anita L. Crawford, RoxComp’s CEO.
Among the fabulous were styleboston’s Terri Stanley, Anthony Corey and Tanya McRae; The Improper Bostonian’s lovely Wendy Semonian Eppich and her handsome husband, Bill Eppich; Exploritas’ Kathy Taylor and her husband, Richard Taylor; and Bon Vivant’s Stephanie Browne and her dapper husband, Basil. The festivities included entertainment by five-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald. And yes, he did sing “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).”
