Interim Superintendent Laura Perille has appointed Charles Grandson as interim chief academic officer of the Boston Public Schools (BPS).

Having served as the deputy chief operating officer of BPS since July of 2017, Grandson previously worked as interim superintendent of the Malden Public Schools, deputy superintendent of educational services and systemic initiatives of the Poughkeepsie City School District in New York, and as a turnaround high school principal in Springfield, MA.

Grandson began his career in education as a BPS humanities teacher at the West Roxbury Education Complex, where he worked to close opportunity and achievement gaps by implementing data-driven inquiry cycles and developed culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy. In his work as deputy COO for BPS, Grandson has worked to support the implementation of key initiatives across the operations division, including leading the operational superintendents team and serving on the BuildBPS leadership team. As interim chief academic officer, Grandson will oversee the Academic Support Services for Equity Team (ASSET) which currently includes the offices of Academics & Professional Learning, English Language Learners, Special Education, Social Emotional Learning & Wellness, and Opportunity and Achievement Gaps.

As superintendent of schools in Malden, Grandson laid a foundation to make Malden globally competitive by implementing the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), capitalizing on Malden’s status as the most diverse school district in Massachusetts. Additionally, he implemented key diversity initiatives, including Harvard’s Reimagining Integration — Diverse and Equitable Schools program, as well as revamping the district’s budget development process for greater transparency. Prior to arriving in Malden, Grandson joined the leadership team at the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) of Government as associate director of leadership development, where he was responsible for developing and implementing leadership development programming for CPL fellowship recipients and matriculated students throughout HKS.

As, Deputy Superintendent of the Poughkeepsie City School District in the Hudson Valley area of New York, Grandson served 5,000 students and 800 employees district-wide, overseeing educational services and systemic initiatives. In this role, Grandson led strategic planning, professional development, and PK-12 academics across the school district. Most notably, Grandson researched, developed, and created programs for college/career and workforce development in collaboration with the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Prior to Poughkeepsie, Grandson served as a district-level School Redesign Officer and as a turnaround high school principal within Springfield Public Schools in Springfield, MA. During his tenure as a turnaround principal, Springfield’s High School of Commerce witnessed substantial student achievement growth in math and English Language Arts, especially amongst students with disabilities and English Learners. Grandson has served as Senior Adjunct Faculty and past Chair of the Educational Leadership Program at Cambridge College, where he prepared licensure candidates for school and district leadership. He has also taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Boston College, Northeastern University, and other colleges throughout the New England region.

Grandson has earned Ed.D., M.Ed., and BA degrees, all from Boston College, where he was also a Donovan Urban Teaching Scholar.  He lives in West Roxbury with his wife Jahmeelah Bai-Grandson, a high school principal, and their toddler son, Charles Grandson V.
