Paucity of skilled workers presents an opportunity

Melvin B. Miller

Americans are habitually optimistic. Every new year they anticipate greater prosperity in the coming months, regardless of whether economic predictions are favorable or not. But with phenomenal changes occurring in the technology of industry, many people will be unqualified for employment without additional training.

According to a recent report by Deloitte, as many as 2.4 million skilled jobs will not be filled by 2028. That is only nine years away. This presents a great opportunity for those who are likely to be unemployed at their present location. However, many of the jobs are likely to be in rural areas.

People are generally mobile. They move to where opportunities exist. In the 1950s and 1960s, several search firms were established to recruit black executives for major firms. It might be a good idea for an entrepreneur to establish a search firm to provide opportunities for African Americans as well as other underemployed urban residents who are willing to travel.
