The Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus (MBLLC) has appointed Kyéra Sterling its new executive director.

Sterling stepped into the role after serving in the Massachusetts House for the last five years.

“I’m honored to come aboard the MBLLC and have the opportunity to serve the very Black and Latinx communities of the Commonwealth that I myself belong to,” Sterling said. “The Caucus has many strengths, but first among them is its membership, who I am humbled to work with to bring underrepresented voices to the table when they need to be heard the most.”

Sterling previously served as chief of staff to Rep. Paul W. Mark (D-Peru). She has served the Boston City Council and the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women where she helped foster the early stages of the 2015 Pay Equity Coalition. She has also volunteered for a swath of political campaigns including Juliette Kayyem’s 2014 gubernatorial bid. In 2016, she was elected a Massachusetts delegate to the Democratic Presidential Convention. In 2019, she completed her Master’s in English Literature and Film at UMass Boston with a central focus on literature and film of the Black diaspora. Sterling is also a 2015 graduate of Emmanuel College where she studied political science and first discovered her passion for political equity.

In her new role, Sterling will serve as the central coordinator for the Caucus stewarding their policy objectives and civic engagement priorities all the while elevating the range of economic and political limitations that encumber Massachusetts residents of color.

The Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, currently Chaired by Carlos González (D-Springfield), is a group of state legislators seeking to define, highlight and analyze the issues and concerns that most affect people of color in the Commonwealth.
