Dorchester youngsters Eli Costa, Jacob Roach, Matheo Gomes and Samantha Weathers drew plants and flowers with the Massachusetts’ Horticultural Society’s Plantmobile at last year’s ParkARTS Boston Children’s Festival, hosted by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. The festival returns to Franklin Park on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
7 year old Aleia and 10 year old Anaylee attended Mayor Menino’s free chess workshop in Roxbury on July 15.  They spent the evening at a game table at Alvah Kittredge Park learning how to play chess with tips offered by staff from the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.  The event is part of the Mayor’s “Knights in the Parks” program which features chess this summer at Kittredge and Howes Parks.  The Boston Parks Department hosts more than 150 free events each year and is a partner with the National Recreation and Park Association and the National Wildlife Federation in “10 Million Kids Outdoors”, an initiative to get 10 million more children outside to reconnect with nature in the next three years and reap the health benefits of having an active lifestyle.   For a list of programs, please visit: www.cityofboston.gov/parks
