Positions available:
SECTION LEADER & SOLOIST — Soprano section
SECTION LEADER & SOLOIST — Alto section
Old South Church in Boston / Gospel Choir

(We also welcome inquiries from other gospel musicians, both vocalists and instrumentalists, who would be interested in joining us occasionally as subs or for special events.)

Old South Church in Boston (Copley Square) is seeking two section leader/soloists — one soprano and one alto — to sing with our multiracial Gospel Choir.  The choir typically rehearses once a month, and we perform at one or two worship services per month, normally accompanied by piano and a few instruments.

We look to our section leader/soloists to:

  • bring stylistic authenticity to their solos and provide vocal leadership in their sections
  • bolster and encourage volunteer choir members as they learn their music

Rehearsals
Once a month, usually Sun. 12:30-2:00 pm

Jazz Worship appearances
Thu. 5:15-7:00 pm — about 8 Thursdays during the year

Sunday Worship appearances
Sun., 10:00 am -noon — 4-5 times per year

Additional events
Occasional extra appearances are based on musician availability and interest.  Beyond the normal schedule, the section leader/soloists are occasionally invited to provide additional solo work at the church.  The choir occasionally collaborates with other groups and performs at events in service of social justice and community service.  In the past, we’ve sponsored collaborative events featuring guest directors such as Donnell Patterson and Jonathan Singleton. Twice, the choir was invited to provide musical entertainment for the Martin Luther King Breakfast at the Boston Convention Center.
This is a paid position.
Improvisational skills and familiarity with gospel music styles are important.   Music reading skills are helpful, but not essential if you learn music quickly.
Continuity is important, but we are also flexible to work around occasional absences.
Old South Church is a progressive church in the United Church of Christ.
For more information on these Section Leader / Soloist positions, please contact Tim Harbold (tim@oldsouth.org).   In your inquiry, please send information regarding your solo and gospel choir background.  If you have a recording or two of your voice to share, that would be very helpful.
If you know others who may be interested in one of these positions, please feel free to share the job posting.
We look forward to hearing from you!
