Sylvia F. Garnett, a native of Boston and longtime former resident of Brookline passed away May 11 at age 96 at Brigham and Women’s hospital. She had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for many years and had been residing at Sherrill House in Jamaica Plain. She was the loving wife of the late Robert C. Garnett Jr. (d. 2003) and mother of the late Robert C. Garnett lll. She is survived by son Wayne Garnett of Chelsea, Granddaughters Jessica Carrion of Cambridge, Margaret, of Providence, RI, and Michelle, of Foxboro, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, among them Francina Mason, Jana Williams, and Maya Handwerk, all of New Jersey.

Sylvia was employed for many years in elementary education and received her Masters degree in that field from Antioch College at Tufts University. In later years she worked in a seniors employment program at the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, of which she was also a member. She also was a member of the Women’s Service Club of Boston. Community work was always at the forefront, and she received many awards and commendations for her efforts in service to underserved minority and aged citizens in the Boston area.

Services/memorial will be private at a later date.
