When Elon Musk called President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” a “disgusting abomination,” he was right for the wrong reasons.

Medicaid provides comprehensive, low-cost health insurance to about 72 million people in the United States, according to recent data. It’s also the nation’s largest public health insurance program, providing coverage to more people than Medicare.

Imagine two neighborhoods just a few miles apart. One is a picture of prosperity, with lush parks, fresh produce and top-notch healthcare, where residents benefit from an environment that promotes well-being and longevity. The other is a stark contrast, grappling with economic hardship, food deserts, and a lack of medical facilities.

Historically, Black Americans have largely been shut out of America’s healthcare system, first as patients, then as professionals. This was due in large part to a variety of long-standing institutional and systematic bigotry that has taken place over many years.
