Despite new laws to keep people from voting and gerrymandering election districts to take away the power of minority communities, the Republican “red wave” that pollsters predicted ahead of last week’s midterms didn’t happen.

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Ruwa Romman became Georgia’s first-ever Muslim woman elected to the state legislature and the state’s first-ever Palestinian American elected to public office. Her win capped a stronger than expected midterm showing for Democrats nationally that defied polling. 

People who are addicted to fake news get it from sources they trust. Trouble is, people who produce it know they are lying.

The sophisticated voter must treat the September election as decisive. Since the candidates hold similar positions on the political issues, voters must decide whether the fact that Pressley is a woman and is black is sufficient to outweigh Capuano’s record of achievement.

Despite near-identical stances on numerous issues, at a recent event, U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano and at-large Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley delineated differences in their leadership style and approach to the issues facing the people of the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District.
