Boston has paid its last respects to Calvin Davis, one of the finest athletes the state has produced, who left this world at the comparatively young age of 51. He leaves a legacy that brings pride and distinction to his family and friends.

This week’s editorial is a personal one for me, because it’s the story of Philip Reavis Sr., who is more like an uncle than a family friend, and his son Philip Reavis Jr., who is my brother from another mother. To tell the story properly, I have to go back to the beginning.

Rafer Johnson, the world decathlon champion who carried the Stars and Stripes at the opening of the 1960 Rome Olympics and became a lifelong Kennedy family friend and Special Olympics ambassador, died at age 86 on Dec. 2 at his home in Los Angeles.
