Thursday, Feb 9 - Willard Traub: Recovery

Willard Traub: Recovery February 9 — March 24, 2012 Recovery is a photographic meditation on affliction and rehabilitation by Willard Traub. The work reflects the artist’s own experiences battling a rare form of blood cancer, drawing on the strength of his talents as a photographer. Recovery began when Traub was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, and examines his treatment, hospitalization, and recovery process. The images, combined with personal prose and poetry, provide an intimate and hopeful commentary on a disease that signifies much larger life issues. Willard Traub is a Massachusetts based photographer whose interests range from the commercial photography of architecture to teaching to fine art photography. Recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a Photography Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and a Polaroid Foundation Grant, his work is represented in private, museum and corporate collections, both nationally and abroad. Completing Petronio’s vision is an exquisite triptych of projected imagery by visual designer Ken Tabachnick and video artist Mike Daly as well as costumes by Tara Subkoff. White escapes to Ohio where he is befriended by a farmer named Udney Hyde. It is not long before White is discovered, and federal marshals surround Hyde's house in the middle of the night. Thursday, Feb 16 - Funk Icon George Clinton to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music

George Clinton crashed a Berklee P-Funk Ensemble rehearsal for an MTV special a few years ago. Next month, he returns to the college to teach a four-day residency, perform a concert, and accept an honorary degree. At the concert, February 16, Berklee President Roger Brown will present Clinton with an honorary doctor of music degree in recognition for the funk icon's enduring musical and cultural contributions. Featuring performances of "I Wanna Testify," an early career doo-wop hit, "Mothership Connection," and other P-Funk classics, the concert will pay tribute to Clinton's musical legacy. February 13-16, Clinton will visit classes, interact with students, and rehearse with the Berklee P-Funk Ensemble. Join the 54th Mass & Colored Ladies Christian Relief Society for their “Open House & Battle of Olustee Commemoration” at the historic Dillaway-Thomas House (next to the Timilty Middle School in John Eliot Square, Roxbury) from noon till 3pm on Saturday, Feb 18. The reenactors of the 54th & CLCRS portray the free men and women of color who were willing to sacrifice their lives for those in bondage in the South during the American Civil War. This is the regiment that was portrayed in the 1989 film, 'Glory'. Activities will include interactive demonstrations and a tour of the historic Dillaway-Thomas House including their 54th Mass exhibit. The day will conclude with a brief ceremony in honor of the bravery of the men at the Battle of Olustee (Feb 1864). This event is for youth and adults. Sunday, Mar 4 - American Cancer Society’s Spin for Hope™

On Sunday, March 4, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., the American Cancer Society will host Spin for Hope™ - a three-hour indoor cycling event that will take place simultaneously at participating health clubs around New England. Participants can register as an individual and cycle for the entire three hours, or form a team of two or more people and take turns cycling. Registration fee is $25. Individuals spinning for the full three hours are encouraged to raise a minimum of $300. Participants sharing a bike are encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 each. In 2011, forty-eight health clubs around New England participated in Spin for Hope and raised more than $334,000 to support the American Cancer Society in their mission to save lives and create a world with more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against cancer. Spin for Hope is an exciting way to fight cancer through fun and fitness. “Exotic beauty and startling voice . . . she is a reflection of a 21st century world culture where ethnicity and national boundaries blur.”—Los Angeles Times Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Mexican-American singer and composer Lila Downs has created one of the most singular explorations of Mexican roots music on both sides of the border. She blends Mexican folk rhythms and native dialects with American folk, blues and rock. Her new release, Pecados y Milagros (Sins and Miracles), is inspired by Downs's experience becoming a new mother (something she calls a "miracle”), and a contemplation of the meaning of “sin” in the modern world. The music is accompanied by a series of specially commissioned votive paintings (retablos) by 15 Mexican painters. Rose was the first person to petition a state legislature in the U.S. for women's rights; the first to say, "Women's rights are human rights." In the 1830s before there was an organized women's movement, Rose became a mentor and colleague to Stanton and Anthony. As an immigrant, a Jew, and a freethinker, she was outside the predominantly American-born Protestants mainstream of reform movements. Nevertheless her eloquence, logic, and humor made her a valued leader. I will share initial successes of the Ernestine Rose Society and her increasing recognition following publication of my collection of her speeches and letters. Free

Friday, Mar 16 - AD 20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries and the Boston Print Fair

Featuring 50 dealers from the United States and Europe, AD 20/21 offers a spectacular selection of 20th and 21st Century fine art, furniture, jewelry, and decorative arts. Returning this year is the 13th Annual Boston Print Fair, which will offer prints, photography, drawings and works on paper. The shows producers are also pleased to announce that celebrated interior designer Vicente Wolf will be the AD 20/21 special guest and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The show opens Thursday, March 15, with a Gala Preview from 5:30-8:30pm, with all proceeds benefiting Boston Architectural College (BAC), New England's largest independent, accredited college of spatial design. Last year's Gala was attended by more than 600 people and raised over $100,000 for the BAC.
